Students in Carolina Currea’s Nutrition & Wellness and Principles of Food Preparation (Career & Technical Education) classes at Hawthorne Middle/High School in Alachua County eagerly engaged with visiting Chef Ebony Griffin, FNP youth programs specialist. Griffin shared her time, expertise, and delicious recipes with the students as part of an eight-week series led by Rebecca Williams, FNP nutrition educator. Inspired by the program, some of the students have pursued food safety manager training, securing summer jobs in the process.
“Since last spring, three more students have earned their ServSafe® and NRFSP certifications and are eager to start working this summer. The lessons taught by Ebony Griffin and Rebecca Williams, particularly their emphasis on the advantages of earning certifications and their practical demonstrations of food safety, have greatly contributed to these achievements. Ebony’s ability to connect with students through her personal story has been especially impactful. The partnership between our school and the Family Nutrition Program continues to be a highlight in my classes, fostering both student growth and success,” said Currea.
