FNP began providing nutrition education at AMIKids Tallahassee in 2019-20. In 2023, the partnership grew to include five locations in various counties after gaining the attention of Mikhail A. Scott, board chairman, AMIKids Tallahassee. Scott requested FNP’s support in implementing a grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS).
“My inspiration for expanding this initiative and partnership with FNP was a result of witnessing how impactful nutrition education was for our AMIKids Tallahassee program. During the pilot phase of the project in 2020 (pre-COVID), FNP introduced our first cohort of students to the health benefits of fruits and veggies by making nutritious smoothies. Several of my students at the time had never seen nor tasted fruits like kiwi before in their lives. This shocking revelation was a key indicator that our students needed more exposure and education on healthy foods and eating.
Since expanding the FNP partnership to five AMIKids schools across Florida, over 100 students have had the opportunity to not only learn about healthy eating habits but also try new foods first-hand through interactive experiences with cooking and urban farming. Education and awareness are the keys to creating positive change and that’s exactly what our students have been afforded through this dynamic partnership.” –Mikhail A.
