Orlando Day Nursery is one of six locations that received garden training and support from the UF/IFAS Extension Family Nutrition Program (FNP), as part of the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County (ELCOC) Great Gardens Project. The project was funded by a Mayor’s Matching Grant from the City of Orlando to establish vegetable gardens in early childhood programs. The “Playgarden,” as it is known at Orlando Day, acts as an outdoor classroom, bringing natural spaces to an urban setting.
“We want the children to explore how healthy food is grown, harvested, and prepared and the reciprocity of the food garden with our native pollinator gardens. They see the process in real time and much science, math, and language is embedded in their weekly interactions.” – Tiffany Taylor, Education Program Development Manager, Orlando Day Nursery
